About the programme
The Diploma in Pharmacy is a two-year programme that prepares students for registered practice as a pharmacist. It covers pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacognosy, pharmacology, biochemistry, hospital and clinical pharmacy, and pharmacy law and ethics.
The programme is deliberately practical. Students spend a substantial part of their time in laboratories preparing dosage forms, performing analytical procedures and learning the dispensing and counselling work that community and hospital pharmacy actually involve. A period of practical training in a pharmacy completes the qualification.
What you will be able to do
- Prepare and evaluate common pharmaceutical dosage forms under supervision.
- Read, interpret and dispense a prescription accurately and safely.
- Explain the therapeutic use, dose and common adverse effects of widely used medicines.
- Apply pharmacy law, professional ethics and record-keeping requirements in practice.
- Counsel patients on the correct and safe use of their medicines.
- Carry out standard analytical and quality-control procedures on pharmaceutical products.
